For the first quarter of 2014, the Waldwick Fire Department responded to 50 requests for assistance. The breakdown included 8 CO alarms, 17 automatic fire alarms, 8 gas emergencies, 3 smoke scares, 2 electrical fires. Also a chimney fire, an oven fire, and a grease fire in a local resturante, plus a vehicle fire. Mutual Aid calls included 2 to Franklin Lakes, 1 to Wyckoff, 1 to Midland Park, and 2 to Allendale. A broken sprinkler head in an industrial building from no heat inside had units responding to secure the system, a dog that ventured out on the ice of Whites Pond had FD members done their ice rescue gear to successfully save the canine. (see story below) In addition, members preformed 3 snow storm stand-bys and 3 hydrant shoveling details due to the heavy snow storms. Rescue 1 assisted at the Bergen County Fire Academy one evening for a Firefighter 2 extrication class. We also trained at the Academy with the Allendale FD. Members attended the wake of a Wallington Firefighter who was killed in the line of duty.
