The WFD mourns the Line Of Duty Death of two FDNY firefighters. FF Joseph Graffagnino 33 of Ladder 5 and FF Robert Beddia 53 of Engine 24 on August 18 2007. Saturday August 18thMANHATTAN NY Two FDNY Firefighters were killed today at a seven alarm fire in Manhattan.Shortly after 330 firefighters were called to a Deutsche Bank building in lower Manhattan for fire coming from the building.When firefighters arrived on the scene they encounter heavy fire coming from the 20th floor of the hi-raise vacant building.Seven alarm were transmitted bringing hundreds of firefighters from across the city responded to the blaze. The vacant structure known as the Deutsche Bank building sustained severe damage in the September 11th terrorist attacks and was in the process of being demolished. As firefighters were making an aggressive attack on the fire two firefighters became trapped and a MAYDAY was transmitted.The two firefighters were located and removed from the building and transported to a local hospital were they were pronounced deadOne of the firefighters killed is 34-year-old Joseph Graffagnino from Brooklyn. The second firefighter killed had not been identified as authorities had not yet notified his family of his deathThe two firefighters were from Ladder 5 Engine 24 which lost 11 members on 911. At a press conference Mayor Michael Bloomberg said five other firefighters were injured fighting the blaze but were treated and released. Although earlier reports suggested officials were concerned about the possibility of a further collapse the mayor stressed that the building and the surrounding area is in no danger. Weve had the Building Department in there Bloomberg said. They looked at every floor and they are totally convinced that the building is safe. Several buildings in the area were evacuated Saturday evening but residents were allowed back in shortly thereafter. Although it is too early to know the cause of the blaze fire officials say that an electrical problem may have been to blame.
