The day started early for our volunteers. At 04:08 the FD was dispatched to Hopper Avenue where wires were burning on a utility pole. Units stood by until PSE&G arrived. At 09:19 an AFA was received from a business on Wyckoff Avenue. Engine 1 responded and checked the structure. It was determined that the alarm was caused by a malfunctioning smoke detector. At 15:32 the Department was dispatched to the strip mall at 10 Franklin Turnpike where a vehicle had crashed into the front of the structure. Engine 2 & Rescue 1 responded.
Crews secured the vehicle and stretch a precautionary hand line. After the vehicle was removed 2 employees were freed from the store as the vehicle had prohibited them from escaping. At no time were the employees in any harm. The crew from Rescue 1 then secured the front of the structure and placed a temporary support where a brick support column had been knocked down.
We thank 230 Chief Dave Murphy and the members of Wyckoff Co #1 who also responded to assist one of their brother firefighters, Emil, whose butcher shop was nearly struck. Captain Paras utilized 230's Command vehicle and did a fine job.
